Thematic Layer on Bing Maps (Flood Zones)

Objective: A national real estate association needs its members to quickly assess the flood threat of properties on its existing Bing Map platform.

Solution: The Data API securely delivers a tile layer with three colors, directly over the Bing Map. The colors visually denote flood zone areas that FEMA classifies as high, moderate and undetermined. Users can pan and zoom the Bing Map as normal, and the flood zones immediately populate.

Neighborhood Snapshots in Custom Analytic Tool

Objective: To encourage neighborhood renewal and new investment in areas affected by foreclosure, a joint public/private venture has built a site that displays comprehensive, real- time snapshots of areas that surround a given property.

Solution: The foreclosure location is sent to our servers, and the Data API returns demographic values for all boundaries surrounding the location e.g. the block group, census tract, zip code, city, county, and state. From a technical standpoint, the data is retrieved via a single call to our server, which populates the site instantaneously.

Political boundaries on Google map

Objective: To support its grant writing efforts, a non-profit needs to easily retrieve the congressional boundaries in areas it targets for funding. The capability is needed within an existing application built in Google Maps.

Solution: Users draw their targeted areas using the 'custom region' tool in the Google Maps API (orange). The PolicyMap Data API is used to display the congressional boundaries (white), and their current representatives (listed at bottom). Developers working for the non-profit built the feature that lists all districts that touch the custom region.

Use the Data API for multiple solutions

1. Populate charts, reports or analytical tools

Data can be used to populate your charts, reports, or analytical tools. This solution includes items such as the numeric values of indicators, vector data to form polygons, or information about individual sites on a map.

2. Create colored layers

Tiles can used to create the rich, colored thematic layers like the ones you see in PolicyMap. Or overlay our tiles on a Google map, Bing map, or other 3rd party map offering.

Both solutions are straightforward to implement, in most cases requiring only a standard request to our server. When data is updated in PolicyMap, the same updates are automatically applied to datasets in the Data API.
